13U Ladies Soar at the Nationals

Congratulations to Coach Sherwood and his 13U Team for making it to the 2010 Division III AAU Nationals in West Chester / King’s Island, Ohio. The girls’ qualified for the National Championship by winning the Metro District Tournament on Long Island, beating the Long Island Stingrays, earlier this year.
When asked about his first impression upon arriving, Coach Sherwood said, “The Nationals experience was an amazing trip that gave all of us a new appreciation for the game. The team checked in at the headquarters on Friday, July 8. Entering the first class facility and meeting players from all over the country was a marvelous experience. The sheer size of some of the teams was mind-blowing.”
Registration consisted of a team picture, a mandatory NCAA meeting, and receiving their schedule for the Tournament. Of course they couldn’t leave without making sure to purchase shirts, shorts, programs and other memorabilia.
Opening ceremonies were held that first night at the Cintas Center on the campus of Xavier University. The parade of teams was exhilarating and knowing they were there representing the Metro District, the Hudson Valley and the Knights, was an extremely proud moment. The first game took place on Saturday at Fairfield High School in Franklin, Ohio. The school was like nothing they had ever seen before. The gymnasium sat 3000 people and had a scoreboard that lowered from the ceiling.
In the first game, they played a team from Georgia and beat them rather handily. Next on the schedule was a team from Ohio. The opposing team was big and fast and it was a real challenge. The game was very physical but the Knights were able to withstand the pressure and came away victorious. On Sunday, the girls played the Hornets from Maryland and ended up 3-0 in pool play, which was a great accomplishment. Monday, the team met their match as they lost to Lakota West, who went on to win the D III championship. In the consolation game, the team lost to the Connecticut Storm. Although disappointed with the outcome. They were very happy with their 4th place finish. Nationals had been a great experience and the team wore the Knights colors proudly!
